Introduction to “Twinkling Watermelon”

The Korean drama “Twinkling Watermelon” (반짝이는 워터멜론) is a collaborative creation by Director Son Jung-Hyun, known for “The Mentalist Zhuge Ji,” and Writer Jin Soo-Wan, who penned “Moon Embracing the Sun.” The story revolves around a CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) teenager with a musical gift who travels to a mysterious realm through a suspicious musical instrument store. There, he forms a band called “Watermelon Sugar” with the peculiar young people he meets. “Twinkling Watermelon” consists of 16 episodes and takes over the time slot previously occupied by “Useless Lies,” airing every Monday and Tuesday night on tvN starting September 25.

The plot seems to have reached a stagnation point. After Eun-Gyeol confesses his feelings for Shi-Kyung to Ha Yi-Chan, the two get into a fight on the school field. Eventually, the school authorities find out about the unauthorized concert on the field and come to chase everyone away. Although Ha Yi-Chan and the others manage to escape, they are beaten up when they return to the school. Eun-You and Eun-Gyeol are called in by Ching-Ya’s stepmother for a talk, and then she calls Shi-Kyung to come to school. Afterwards, Ching-Ya is very angry with Eun-Gyeol. After Eun-Gyeol understands the situation, he writes a note to his mother saying that he will help her with Ha Yi-Chan.

Eun-Gyeol and Ha Yi-Chan sit down to negotiate and agree not to see Shi-Kyung before the school festival, although this agreement loses its effect when they leave the restaurant. When Eun-Gyeol sees Shi-Kyung at school, he runs away to keep his promise, but to others it looks like flirting. Ha Yi-Chan thinks that Eun-Gyeol broke the promise and invites Shi-Kyung to a new place to practice. Eun-Gyeol, who wants to help his mother, brings her to the training place as well. He says he wants Shi-Kyung to take pictures and Ching-Ya to be the stylist.

Eun-Gyeol takes Shi-Kyung with him, saying he wants to test her skills. They ride a motorcycle to the outskirts of the city, but run out of gas halfway. They sit under the starry sky and Eun-Gyeol continues to work hard for his parents’ happiness and tries to win Shi-Kyung over. However, he forgets that he is also 18 years old and falls for Shi-Kyung’s beauty, realizing that he is also a passionate young man. Luckily, this Shi-Kyung is actually Eun-You, otherwise it would be awkward for Eun-Gyeol when he returns to the future and sees her as an aunt.

Ha Yi-Chan stays in the training room with Ching-Ya. He first apologizes to her in sign language and thanks her for saving his life. Then he looks through Ching-Ya’s sketchbook and sees a portrait of himself, finally realizing that she likes him. It seems that Eun-Gyeol’s assistance will be successful. Ha Yi-Chan will probably start to like Ching-Ya from now on, otherwise there won’t be enough time! The plot needs to pick up speed. Everything seems to be going well this week, except for the annoying chairman. Whether it’s Eun-Gyeol, Eun-You, Ha Yi-Chan or Ching-Ya, everyone is moving in a positive direction. However, the ending clearly indicates that things will take a dark turn next week. Can Eun-Gyeol change the course of Ha Yi-Chan’s serious accident, or is history unchangeable? It all depends on how the scriptwriter decides to write it. What exactly is the accident that leads to Ha Yi-Chan’s injury and subsequent deafness? The music store owner mentioned that Eun-Gyeol is very worried about his parents, which is worrying.

Ha Yi-Chan says that he likes Shi-Kyung, but Ching-Ya generously suggests that they should be friends first. Luckily, she travels back in time and meets Eun-Gyeol, adding a new chapter to her youth.
